News of NICE report on where to have your baby

News announced this morning from NICE (national institute of health and care excellence) stated that in uncomplicated pregnancies it is safer to have your baby at home or a mid-wife led centre. Good news for new parents in Brighton and Hove where we have a well established home birth team and following the commitment from the trust that a birth centre will be built in the near future.

Choice in principle but it has to be informed. Deciding who exactly can have a home delivery can have it’s problems and with any doubt, although there is a high level of competence with midwives, a specialist opinion must be obtained. Midwives can, possibly only rarely, be reluctant to have another opinion and would only be well thought of if they did. As a retired GP one became obviously accustomed to further opinions.
