Update on the plans for a Birth Centre for Brighton and Hove

Brighton and Hove MSLC has a new chairperson, Suzanne Jarrett. Hannah Sherlock has been chairing for four years and decided it was time to hand over to someone with fresh energy and ideas. Hannah is still involved in the MSLC for the time being as co-chair to support Suzanne in her new role.

Last week Suzanne and Hannah went to see the new Chief Executive of Brighton and Sussex University Hospital Trust, Matthew Kershaw. We wanted to know why Brighton still does not have a Birth Centre – so necessary for women to have real choice around where to give birth in our city. We were reassured that BSUH is 100% committed to providing such choice – but there are currently issues around both cost and location. He explained that the management team are working on a plan to solve both issues – and that he is quietly confident we are close to a resolution.

We agreed that we would meet again for an update before Easter 2014 – and if plans were not yet in motion by then, we would organise a user petition/demonstration and if necessary, call on intervention from the UK government.

This is the first time we have set a deadline in this way. Lets hope it does the trick. We will of course keep you updated.
